Starting Mini-Unit 8:
*Although we are finishing this unit on multiplication and division, students will continue to learn and practice multiplication facts. Almost all students have mastered the facts for 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 9, and 10! Woohoo!

Martin Luther King Day

In an effort to help the kids better understand why we celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr., we read Happy Birthday Dr. King. In this great book, we learned about Martin's life and dreams. After we finished reading, students created their very own Martin that included a summary of Martin's dream and their own dream. The idea came from another teacher's blog. Here are some of the examples.

Also, we were lucky to have a volunteer read Martin's Big Words as a part of MLK Read for Peace Day. What a great way to honor such an amazing historical figure. The students really put our volunteer to the test with lots of great questions.

Weekly Update 1/7/13

The students understandably were a bit sleepy on Wednesday, but were back in full swing by Thursday.

Communication Arts:
Story: The Gardener (continued)
Focus: Cause and Effect and Author's Purpose
Genre: Realistic Fiction
Spelling: prefixes contractions*

Math: 
Unit 7: Multiplication and Division with 0-5, 9, and 10.
A letter was sent home on Friday explaining this unit. It is so important that students practice multiplication facts at home. Flashcards can be purchased at the Dollar Tree or can be made out of index cards. The students are excited about earning multiplication licenses. Students earn these by completing facts in under a minute. Pictures to come!

Weekly Update 1/1/2013

Happy New Year! I feel so fortunate I was able to spend a lot of time with family and friends in New York over the break. I hope you and your families were able to do the same.
